A Narrative
I first gained professional experience in the field of psychology as a volunteer at a suicide crisis line in 1979. I later took on the position of Coordinator of Services with the same organization. Since that time, I have worked in a variety of settings with a variety of people. I worked for 6 years at Topeka State Hospital with persons described as severely & persistently mentally ill. I have worked with adults and adolescents, elderly and medically needy persons, victims and perpetrators of abuse and neglect, people in the criminal justice system, and with intellectually impaired people. I lived in Oregon from 1995 to 2015, and from 1997 to 2003 was employed in Portland as an outpatient therapist with Tualatin Valley Centers Mental Health and Addiction Services (now called LifeWorks NW). I have provided clinical supervision to graduate students and other mental health professionals, taught Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and am presently interested in the pursuit of legal and ethical matters related to the increasingly complex place where they intersect with clients’ rights, and the ability of skilled clinicians to engage best practices. Toward these legal and ethical matters, I have been active in the development of new Oregon statutes and rules which govern the practice of psychology.
